A&P oral and practical prep
The last step to your mechanic certificate. Practice the closed-book oral the way the FAA builds it, from the codes you missed on your written test, and know what each practical project expects before the examiner hands it to you.

How the oral and practical works in 2026
After you pass each written test, a DME tests you in person on that section: General, Airframe or Powerplant. Each section has an oral and a practical, and the DME downloads both from the FAA's Mechanic Test Generator. You never see the test in advance and the examiner no longer picks the questions.
The oral
- Closed book
- No references allowed. A Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME) asks short spoken questions and listens for the key point.
- 4 questions minimum
- Even with 100% on the written test. The FAA's Mechanic Test Generator picks them at random from the whole section.
- Plus one per code you missed
- Every ACS code listed on your written test report gets one more question. That makes up to 22 for General and 34 for Airframe or Powerplant.
- 70% of the whole section
- Scored on the whole section's oral, not subject by subject. Fail it and you retake that section's whole oral.
The practical
- Projects
- 9 projects for General, 11 for Airframe and 11 for Powerplant. Each one is a hands-on or paper task plus 2 practical questions.
- Open book
- For the practical questions you may use the references the DME provides: the regulations, ADs, ACs and the manufacturer's manuals.
- Pass 7 of 9, or 8 of 11
- Miss either question, or do the work below a return to service standard, and that project fails. Any disregard for safety fails the test.
- Retests
- Wait 30 days, or retest sooner with a signed statement from a mechanic holding that rating who gave you extra instruction. A practical retest covers only the failed projects.
All tests must be passed within 24 months. Bring two signed copies of FAA Form 8610-2, your written test reports, photo ID and proof of eligibility.

Where this comes from
The real oral and practical questions are secure, so nobody can honestly sell them. Every question and guide here is original, written from the FAA's public handbooks, regulations and advisory circulars, with the source page named. The test rules above come from:
- 14 CFR 65.17, 65.19 and 65.79 (pass mark, retests, what the oral and practical cover)
- Aviation Mechanic Airman Certification Standards, FAA-S-ACS-1, Appendix 1
- Aviation Mechanic ACS Companion Guide, FAA-G-ACS-1
- FAA Mechanic Test Generator FAQs (May 2023)
- FAA Airman Testing Changes and Announcements, September 2026 Special Edition (new practical projects for General since April 20, 2026)
